Metynnis lippincottianus PERU

The silver dollars of the genus Metynnis can be easily recognized by the shape of their adipose fin. The determination of the species, however, is not that easy. We recently received beautiful spotted silver dollars from Peru. There are two known species with large spots in the Hobby, namely M. lippincottianus and M. maculatus. M. maculatus has an enormous range in South America, whereas M. lippincottianus is restricted to Brazil and Guyana. An exact determination of our fish was not possible yet, but they look definitely different from the M. maculatus we already have in stock. So we decided to name them provisionally M. lippincottianus PERU. It is also possible that our fish represent a still undescribed species. These silver dollars become around 12 cm long. They are magnificent schooling fish that fit perfectly for tanks with South American cichlids. Plants are taken as food. For our customers: the fish have code 267904 on our stocklist. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale trade. Lexicon: Metynnis: ancient Greek, means "in between the share"; this refers to the spine before the dorsal fin. maculatus: Latin, means "spotted". lippincottianus: dedication name.
