Leporellus vittatus

The headstander Leporellus vittatus has an enormous area in which it is found, however there it is rather rare. Thus there are data for Venezuela, for the Pantanal in the southwest of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia. It does not surprise that some local races and varieties are formed, which deviate in their appearance from each other. In their requirements for maintenance however they are to a large extent identical. They should be kept in a swarm or a not to small group. Since they can reach about 25 cm, they need tanks of at least 1.20 m length. An slightly sour pH and a not to high water hardness will meet their requirements, also the water temperature should not exceed 26°C for longer time. Against their surname Leporellus species usually do not stand downward with the head like the related and substantially better-known Anostomus species. They are rather oriented to horizontal surfaces, which they search gladly for food.(Photo F. Schäfer, Text K. Diehl)
