Boraras micros

The tiniest species of Boraras is B. micros. This real dwarf attains only a length of 1.5 cm (aquarium kept specimen, however, can grow a little bit larger than wild ones, which is a common phenomenon in ornamental fish species). B. micros is very similar to B. maculatus, but can be distinguished from it by the stouter body and the smaller shoulder spot. The latter is smaller than the eye in B. micros. as large as or larger than the eye in B. maculatus. Like in all species of Boraras several varieties are known. The systematical status of these is not researched yet. Initially B. micros has been described from northern Thailand. The specimens collected there are usually of a whitish or pinkish ground coloration. In B. micros collected in southern Thailand the ground coloration usually is a deep red. Thus we call it B. cf. micros „red“, as it possibly represents a new species. For our customers: B. micros has code 482812 on our stocklist, B. cf. micros „red“ 452822. Please note that we exclusively supply the wholesale market. Text: Frank Schäfer. Photos: Frank Schäfer and Dieter Bork
